2. The Hustler

Our social media is flooded by merchandise sold by friends these days. From ube pandesal and sushi bake to handmade soaps and self-knit plushies! Everyone is making ends meet and looking to find additional sources of income. But what sets the hustlers apart is that while 26% of businesses in the Philippines are shutting down (Cahiles-Magkilat), they are doing the exact opposite and opening businesses! It doesn’t matter if you’re selling food online or if you put up a startup, if you’re working hard to earn money outside of your job this year or because you lost your job, you’re probably The Hustler!

3. The Vlogger

Youtube is one of the biggest communities for content these days. Did you know that there are approx. 1,300,000,000 people who use Youtube (Fortunelords)? That means that if you want to put content out there, one of the most effective ways to have people notice you right away is through making Youtube videos! With so many niches to choose from, you can surely build a community around your interests in Youtube. Did you start a vlog or your own youtube channel this year? You must be The Vlogger!

4. The Chef

Why go out to buy food when you can make it on your own at home! With most people staying home this year, there’s been a huge spike in at home baking. A lot of people are rediscovering their kitchens and making goodies to cheer themselves up. Did you know that according to studies, cooking “ease stress and restlessness, and enhance mindfulness” (MiNDFOOD)? Do you find cooking to help with coping with the anxieties that come with this pandemic? Are you biting into that cookie fresh out of the oven after you carefully measured and mixed the ingredients that went into it? You might be The Chef

5. The Guru

Most of us like to learn but some of us have done that long before 2020 and are now the experts in their respective fields! Be it in fitness, beauty, cooking or investing, gurus are everywhere! Informal education has become popular in the last decade and with the current trends in online learning, more people are choosing to learn from gurus and coaches online now. Are you an expert in your field? Did you just put up your professional profile and started teaching people about your craft? You must be The Guru!

6. The Critic

With huge production companies making movies, theater, and even circuses available for online streaming, it’s not surprising that with more time in our hands, we find ourselves spending hours and hours behind the screen watching entertainment. Some of us don’t stop there however, they talk about their experiences online and share their views about the most recent movie they watched or the latest song they listened to. Was the act in that musical heart-wrenching? Was the character development in that telenovela lackluster? Let your friends know! Why stop at a measly recommendation when you can give them a breakdown of all the reasons they should or should not watch that anime series? Moreover, why should anyone miss out on something so amazing and free, right? If you find yourself going online to share about the movies you’ve watched, the music you’ve listened to, and the books you’ve read, you’re probably The Critic who helps everyone make an informed decision when selecting their next form of entertainment.

7. The Athlete

No gyms? No problem! While most of us are stuck at home wondering how we can maintain our weight with our newfound sedentary lifestyle, some of us find themselves getting creative and turning their homes into makeshift gyms! Afterall, it’s not about the equipment, it’s about working out and challenging the body. From calisthenics to workout challenges, there are many ways to keep fit without stepping foot outside the house. Do you find ways to keep yourself fit and sane while stuck indoors? Better yet, have you lost that muffin top or gotten those abs while staying at home? You must be The Athlete!

8. The Insta-Model

Who needs a studio when you can take amazing photos with your phone camera in the comfort of your own home? Rediscovering areas in your house you haven’t visited in a while? Trying on that shirt you bought last year but never got to wear? How about those lipsticks you forgot you had? If you find yourself taking a lot of photos of yourself while you’re at home and posting them in your social media accounts, you’re probably The Insta-Model! With people staying at home, one of the major forms of entertainment is social media. And what better way to enjoy it than to actively participate by posting your own photos!

9. The Social Media Aficionado

Are those earphones new? Is that your self made ramen? Do you just want to tell people about how your puppy chewed your slipper? You’re probably The Social Media Aficionado! Being stuck at home is difficult; you have cabin fever, you are sick and tired of seeing the same people over and over again, and you’re probably tired from lazing around in bed all day. Talking to the mirror is great, but it doesn’t talk back, does it? That’s why people turn to social media and post about what they are going through in their lives. Doing this allows people to feel closer to their friends and communities without risking their health through physical interaction.

10. The Gamer

Haven’t left the house? Why do you need to when you can go on otherworldly adventures virtually through your avatar and solve who knows what challenges without even breaking a sweat? If you’ve been training yourself mentally with video gaming, you’re probably The Gamer. Contrary to what people think, the gamer isn’t someone who plays games all day and doesn’t do anything else. The Gamer is someone who chooses to play games as opposed to engaging in other hobbies at home as a form of self-relaxation and even growth. Studies show that kids who play video games tend to be more intelligent than those who just play outside (McDermott). Want to challenge yourself? Pick a game and play!

What Personas Tell Us

Personas are tropes built from the characteristics of people we find recurring around us. With 2020 putting us all in unique positions we've never been before, we're bound to notice changes in our lifestyles and even in ourselves. Hence, these 2020 personas are a bit different from what we usually see. However, while it's entirely possible to fully identify with only one persona, human beings are not one dimensional and are likely to be a combination of these personas.

The purpose of these personas is to help you identify the kind of person you're becoming so that you may be more aware, moving forward, about who you are. After all, awareness is the first step to growth and improving oneself.
